Keynote presentation: Graham Chisnall, MD, Commercial Aerospace & Operations (A|D|S) A|D|S sectors represent over 20 per cent of UK manufacturing, employ over 500,000 people in the UK and generate more than £60 billion per year to the UK economy. UK Aerospace alone was responsible for £22.2 billion and more than 100,000 jobs in 2009, which places it as number 1 in Europe and second only to the US globally with a 17 per cent global market share. To ensure UK Industry secures leadership, A|D|S executes a comprehensive and coherent set of programmes from market and business development activities, both at home and abroad, through to technology, supply chain improvement and skills initiatives that deliver business benefit to our members, to address the global challenges and opportunities in these high-value sectors. |

Spirit Aerosystems: Spirit future business outlook and the way it expects its supply chain to react to this The commercial aircraft transport system continues to cycle through changes to improve its competitiveness. The consequences of this are evident in the ongoing consolidation within the Airline industry, the shifting focus on the roles of the OEMS and the rationalisation of the supply chains that support them. The formation of Spirit Aerosystems, five years ago, is one example along this journey of change. Constant downward pressure to reduce cost, together with specific requirements from emerging markets, place additional challenges on those in the supply chain that have high labour costs. The potential to counter these pressures is emerging through the opportunity for exploiting alternative approaches offered by the shift from the analogue to digital world. This shift is influencing the collaborative working environment, the development of new materials and how organisations approach their engineering solutions. This emerging landscape with some examples of how Spirit AeroSystems is becoming engaged will be described. This will provide food for thought on how UK companies can exploit their creativity to participate in an industry that will continue to be subjected to the complex challenges created by a competitive global environment. Russia: Current and future developments in the Russian aerospace sector and opportunities for the UK supply chain. The UK’s capabilities in aerospace are acknowledged, understood and appreciated in Russia. At the same time, the Russian aerospace industry is modernizing with a new product line led by the Sukhoj Superjet 100. The Russians recognize the need to cooperate with foreign manufacturers – hence their involvement with Boeing, Snecma, Rolls-Royce and others. They also bring great technical and theoretical expertise to the table. But Russia is still Russia with its Byzantine bureaucracy, centralized administration, vast distances and the difficult and unavoidable Russian language. Russia is a challenging market. This presentation outlines just some of the great opportunities available to those with the patience and determination to succeed. Steve Truswell |
