Dr Ruth L. Mallors

Director Aerospace & Defence KTN

Ruth brings with her a wealth of experience across multiple sectors in providing strategic input, facilitation and guidance to enable business change and improvement through effective Knowledge Management and Knowledge Transfer.

Before joining the KTN, Ruth has worked for Ernst & Young, Sainsbury’s and AMEC all in senior roles leading organisational transformation through Knowledge Management programmes as well working as a freelance management consultant.

Ruth holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh in addition to her first degree from University College London.

Ruth is responsible for developing and broadening the strategic agenda of the KTN, which includes maintaining and creating relationships with senior stakeholders from Industry, Academia and Government, across multiple Departments and Sectors as appropriate.

Paul Burns
Supply Chain Director F-35, BAE Systems

Paul has been in Supply Chain and Procurement roles for over 20 years working for BAE Systems, then with Airbus, and has now transferred back to BAE Systems. Paul has experience across many commodities and dealing globally with complex supply chains. Paul has successfully completed CIPS accreditation and an MS c in Business Management at Warwick. Paul has managed many suppliers globally including USA, Russia, China and Romania setting up production lines and Supply Chain support. His current responsibilities include building a Supply Chain for F35 which is capable and affordable which has the capacity to meet future rate predictions, Integrating with Integrated Services developing people and capability across the business.

Paul’s areas of expertise include Supply Chain construction to cover rates and global logistic solutions. He is also able to manage procurement activities on large contracts to ensure value and performance and Supplier Development management around relationship’s and building associations to drive continuous performance.

Paul has recently taken up Triathlons in 2009, completing the London Triathlon in August and the London Marathon 2010. He also enjoys Mountain biking. Paul’s eldest son plays Rugby for Wales under 16’s Academy.

Frank Bamford

Senior Vice President, Business Development and Strategy

GKN Aerospace

Frank Bamford was appointed to the role of Senior Vice President - Business Development and Strategy in October 2006. Reporting to Marcus Bryson, CEO of GKN Aerospace, and based in the UK, Frank is responsible for Strategic planning and business development, customer relationship management and public relations across the GKN Aerospace Division.

Prior to this assignment Frank was the Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing for the Propulsion and Special Products Division located in San Diego and was responsible for the development of the Engine and Nacelle Systems and Special Product Group business streams.

Frank has held a number of positions in the GKN Aerospace portfolio which included the Vice President Sales for Europe developing the aero structures business. In 2000 Frank had returned from a 5-year secondment in the USA and Canada where he was the Head of Region – Americas for GKN Westland Helicopters, now Agusta-Westland. During his period in the United States Frank had led the successful EH101 campaign team to secure the Canadian Government Search & Rescue Helicopter programme. Before moving to Canada Frank had held the role of Executive VP in the Washington office with responsibilities for Aerospace, Helicopter and Defence Vehicle relationships.

Frank joined GKN in 1977 and has held various posts, which included aircraft production, international field support and customer training. Frank is married with 2 daughters, currently living in the Southwest of England and his interests include music, fishing, and enjoying time with his family.

Neil Semple

Head of Aerospace, Advanced Engineering Sector,

UK Trade & Investment

Neil Semple is Head of Aerospace within UK Trade & Investment’s Advanced Engineering Team. With professional advisers across 96 international markets, UK Trade & Investment is the government department that helps UK-based companies succeed in the global economy and assists overseas companies in bringing their high quality investment to the UK. The Advanced Engineering Team co-ordinates the UK Government’s international aerospace strategy and funds activity such as trade missions, seminars and trade development support.

Neil has held various international trade positions within the UK Government over a 13-year period including market responsibilities for South Asia, South Africa and Central and Eastern Europe and sectoral posts covering water, marine, engineering and aerospace.

Neil is studying for a MBA and has postgraduate qualifications in Strategy and Marketing.

He has previously served as a local councillor and is currently Chair of his local primary school’s Parent Council.

Neil has studied and worked in the USA and South Africa.

Performance Review Institute (PRI)

Joanna Leigh has worked in the aerospace industry for the Performance Review Institute for over seven years. In that time she has worked closely with many big industry names including Rolls-Royce plc and The Boeing Company. She has attended and spoken at many conferences throughout Europe regarding aerospace supplier quality, especially regarding special processes and products and the Nadcap program. Among her responsibilities, she works with the Nadcap Supplier Support Committee, a body which represents the views of the aerospace supplier to the industry.

Martin Wright is a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years experience with major defence and aerospace companies. His experience includes the management of integrated production facilities for the manufacture of defence and aerospace systems and components, the management of major projects and business sectors within the industry.
He has been responsible for a wide range of business ventures with UK and overseas companies and Government organisations and has expertise and experience in international collaboration and multi-national, multi-cultural project teams. He has played a major role in the development and implementation of business transformation programmes including the implementation of integrated business teams.
He worked as a Regional Business Advisor for the aerospace sector in the North West prior to being appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the North West Aerospace Alliance in 2004. He is currently a Director of North of England Excellence, Chair of the Aerospace and Advanced Engineering Sector Skills Committee for the North West Region of England and a member of the University of Manchester Aerospace Research Institute.

UK Composites Industry Sector Briefing

Composites UK Ltd

Dr Halliwell has been involved in the polymer industry for over 20 years, focusing on FRPs (fibre reinforced polymers) for the last 12. A Board Director of Composites UK since May 2008, Sue took on the role of administrator in October 2008 and was elected Secretary of the association in May 2010.

Composites UK Ltd is the trade association for the UK composites industry. Established in 1989 as The Composites Processing Association, the name change to Composites UK in 2007 better reflects the broad membership base and remit of the group. The mission is to encourage the safe and effective use of composite materials across all industry sectors, and to support the UK composites industry with advice on technical and legislative issues.

Governed by a Board of Directors, the main activities of the association include an interactive website, newsletter, events and helpdesk. The member directory is an invaluable online tool to search for expertise, materials, manufacturers etc in specific areas. With over 100 members in the UK the association is a strong industry voice.

National Composites Centre

Peter was an undergraduate apprentice with British Aerospace in Filton and gained a Aeronautical Engineering Degree from Loughborough. He is a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Shortly after completing his apprenticeship he moved to Cranfield College of Aeronautics as a stress engineer on research modifications to various aircraft. In 1985 he moved to the Isle of Wight to join Britten Norman as Chief Stress Engineer on the Islander and Trislander fleet of Aircraft responsible for over 1200 in service aircraft and major modifications to the existing design. Five years later he joined the fast developing Westland Aerospace as head of Project Engineering and Chief Designer, leading activities on the company’s large range of design-build nacelle and large composite structures programs. When GKN bought the Westland group, and the company became GKN Aerospace, Peter took up a management board position as VP Engineering, responsible for all company Engineering and research activities. During this period he was heavily involved in both organic growth and M&A activities that helped the company more than double in size, and also headed up a team of more than 600 engineers across 3 countries. He moved to Airbus in 2001 as VP Structures Engineering (UK) responsible for over 1000 permanent staff and at least as many temps, working on wings and landing gear for A380, A400m and other Airbus aircraft. Since then he has held a number of Executive positions for Airbus in Toulouse including being responsible for overall Aircraft Structural Architecture and leading the team that undertook critical architectural work, such as the metal vs carbon decisions on A350, and lately heading up the Company’s research strategy and planning activity, setting the total company research plan for the 2007 – 2017 time frame. He is a member of the ACARE Strategy Review Group, and authored much of the paper “ ACARE Beyond 2020 (Towards 2050)” which set out the agenda for European Aerospace research for the next 30+ years.

Since May 2010 he has been Executive Director of the National Composites Centre.
